As we reflect on another successful year, we are thrilled to share the impactful strides made in our mission to improve access to, availability and uptake of life-saving medicines and health services down to the last mile in Africa. Project Last Mile is a collaborative effort, bringing together public and private sector partners across sectors to deliver impact.

In this report, you’ll read about how translating innovations, best practices and expertise from the private sector in supply chain and strategic marketing and communications have contributed to health systems strengthening across Africa.

2022 highlights

  • Piloted a capability development model in Côte d’Ivoire to support last mile delivery workforces in managing health commodities.
  • Tested a last mile digital inventory tracking tool in Sierra Leone to improve supply chain visibility.
  • Supported two social enterprises in Uganda and Ghana with route-to-market solutions for family planning products.
  • Explored expanding the MINA. For Men. For Health campaign from South Africa to Namibia, leveraging Coca-Cola System’s approach to localizing brands.
  • Developed a performance management toolkit for last mile delivery workforces in Rwanda and Togo.
  • Initiated a project in Malawi with USAID and the Ministry of Health to increase COVID-19 vaccine uptake among key populations.
  • Expanded a social media campaign in Eswatini to reach all Facebook users, building trust in COVID-19 vaccines.
  • Developed a strategy to involve faith-based leaders in promoting COVID-19 vaccinations and better health outcomes in South Africa.

Our work

Since 2009, Project Last Mile has supported ministries of health in strengthening routine health systems. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Project Last Mile shifted focus to address immediate and emerging needs.

As the pandemic subsides, the focus on emergency response will naturally decrease.

To address an unmet need for specialized technical assistance among social enterprises and innovative non-profit organizations in global health, Project Last Mile is expanding its portfolio of support to these entities.
